FAQ's
1
Q: I’m not flexible, will I still be ok to try yoga? A: It’s a myth you have to be flexible for yoga. The way Iyengar Yoga is taught with the aid of props means all students will make remarkable quick progress to achieve postures and feel the benefit.
2
Q: How can I get the most out of a class? A: Listen to your teacher, ask if unsure and practice at home if you are able. Teachers are always trained to be fully prepared and don’t mind being interrupted by students wanting to understand more about the yoga they are doing.
3
Q: My friend leaves for yoga with a bag of foam blocks belts and wooden bricks.
Do I need these and what are they for? A: All the kit needed will be provided. Props are used in Iyengar Yoga to aid different levels of ability and to help the body feel the full benefit of all the stretches. They also ensure that you don’t ‘over-do’ or ‘under-do’ a certain pose.
4
Q: I was given a yoga video for Christmas. Why do I need to go to a class? A: Well-taught yoga is like an exact science. You are unlikely to be able to achieve this at home alone with no guidance. By trying to copy the video you actually might end up doing more harm than good.
5
Q: Is Iyengar yoga physical? A: Yes there is a physical element to every Iyengar Yoga position.
6
Q: I have got a long-standing back injury, how can yoga help aid my recovery? A: Yoga can help in many ways. Yoga strengthens, supports, re-aligns, nurtures and nourishes your body. It won’t just help your back, but will ensure all your other muscle groups are exercised and conditioned to help aid your back’s recover.
7
Q: I am interested in giving yoga a try.
Will I still be able to attend a class even though I have never practiced yoga before? A: Yes. Classes are designed to cater for all levels. It is possible it is best to come to the introductory class then progress to the beginner’s course.
8
Q: I can only attend a class once a week. Will I still see some benefits? A: Yes you will see immediate results although it is a discipline that does require commitment. Like with most types of exercise, you really do get out what you put in.
9
Q: Is it OK to eat before a class? A: Students should allow at least 4 hours after a heavy meal or 2 hours after a light meal before practicing yoga. Easily digestible drinks and snacks can be consumed closer to the start of a class.
10
Q: What’s the difference between Iyengar yoga and other types of yoga? A: It differes from the other types of yoga as the focus is more on the quality of the postures rather than the quantitiy. It is therefore essential to go to classes with a fully qualified teacher as they can make sure you get into the correct poses to benefit your body.
11
Q: How long before I can wrap both legs behind my head?! A: It is never more true than in yoga, that you get out what you put in!
