The world's most widely practiced method of Yoga is that taught by Yogacharya Sri B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India.
Iyengar was born on December 14, 1918, in Bellur, India and has studied and practiced yoga continuously for over 70 years.
His thorough mastery of this ancient art is unrivalled in modern times and he has won worldwide respect and recognition for his achievements, making Yoga accessible and relevant to people everywhere, no matter what their physical or mental ability.
Iyengar himself has taught in five continents and there are some 2000 qualified Iyengar yoga teachers in the world working in over 40 countries with over 180 Iyengar yoga associations worldwide.
Mr Iyengar continues to set the standard for his teachers and students while his textbooks on yoga have become classics. He is based at and runs the Ramamani Memorial Iyengar Yoga Institute in Pune, India, where his daughter Smt. Geeta and son Sri Prashant Iyengar are also directors.
Iyengar Yoga teachers are trained with meticulous precision so that students can attend a class anywhere in the world and receive the same quality instruction.
Iyengar Yoga works on a physical level to build a strong and healthy body. In a typical class students follow a structured sequence of poses designed to unlock the stiffer areas of the body and promote strength. Various props such as wooden blocks or bricks may be used to improve stability and alignment. Classes are designed to suit varying levels of ability with the props being used to ensure that all pupils can ‘do’ and hold the pose.
